Delta Lambda Chapter Projects
Supporting all levels of the Society is important to Delta Lambda Chapter members and is a component of many chapter fundraising activities. Members share their time, talent, and treasure to maintain their projects. Delta Lambda Chapter members support the following projects in the community and on the Area V, Chi State and International levels.
Chapter and Community
Reading is Fundamental (RIF)
The RIF program is sponsored and funded in conjunction with the national Reading is Fundamental Program. Funds to support the RIF project are earned through fundraising, grant writing, and donations from members and the community.
Two times a year RIF volunteers (retired teachers, librarians, members of the community, and parents) go out to 6 schools of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to read and to present books to students in grades T/Kindergarten through sixth. All special needs students are included in both the reading and the receiving of books. About 3000 students are read to and over 7000 books are distributed each year. For many of these children it is the only book they have ever owned.
Distributions:
During the Covid time (2020-22), there was one distribution per year.
For 2022-23 there were distributions at least twice at the 6 schools T/K to Gr 6.
For the 2023-24 year there will be at least 2 distributions but only for T/K to Gr. 3. This is due to the higher cost of books and fewer funds available from our fundraisers.

Awards, Grants-in-Aid, and Scholarships
Our local chapter of DKG sends in one nomination each year for the Chi State Outstanding Student Teacher Award. One student teacher from each Chi State area is selected for this award. The form for this award can be found on the Chi State website.
The chapter awards New Teacher Recruitment Grants-in-Aid every year. The number and amount of grants depends on the budget, but between three to four $500.00 grants are given. These grants are for any young lady who is in the process of acquiring a teaching credential.
Scholarships are only available to chapter members. They are awarded to members seeking higher education and/or to participate in professional growth classes and workshops.
New Teachers Welcome Breakfast
At the beginning of the new school year in the fall, new teachers to the Monterey Peninsula School District (MPUSD) are invited to a new teacher breakfast hosted and presented by members of Delta Lambda Chapter. Teachers are welcomed to the profession and the area. A special gift is given to each new teacher.
Girls, Inc.
The purpose of Girls, Inc. is to educate, encourage, and support girls in pursuing a high education. Delta Lambda chapter contributes to the program by attending their fundraisers and making an annual contribution to the project.
Holiday Giving and Sharing
At the yearly chapter holiday meeting, members choose local areas of need to which they can contribute their time, talent, and treasure.
Funsters
The Funsters is a group made up of retired chapter members who meet for lunch once a month. In addition to enjoying a pleasant meal together, a Funster provides volunteer time and support for chapter programs and projects.
Area V, Chi State and DKG International
Delta Lambda Chapter and its members volunteer time and make financial contributions to Area V, Chi State and International funds as needed. In addition to those projects and funds listed below, other funds include, but are not limited to, World Fellowship Fund, Scholarship Fund, Chi State Education Center Fund, Emergency Fund, and Hostelship Fund.
Area V Mary Marchi Professional Development Fund

stipends to Area V chapter members to support their attendance at
workshops, state meetings, and professional development classes. Delta Lambda Chapter contributes to and participates in the fundraising activities that help support this fund.

The Chi State Learning Is For Everyone Foundation-LIFE
The LIFE Foundation is a statewide project of Chi State. It is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation organized in the state of California. The mission of the LIFE Foundation is to promote and support special projects related to learning and literacy within the state of California. The LIFE Foundation provides grants and/or the use of the 501(c)3 Tax Identification Number to chapters for use in applying for grants and other financial support for learning and literacy projects.
Delta Lambda Chapter was one of the first chapters to receive a grant from The LIFE Foundation. The chapter has also made use of the Tax ID Number to raise funds for its RIF project. Each year the chapter makes a contribution to LIFE to support its mission.

Teachers Helping Another Teacher - THAT
The THAT Program was created to promote support for classroom teachers. Chi State members provide assistance in these five (5) focus areas: Individual Teachers; A particular School; A School District; Community and Local Government Officials; Higher Education and Professional Development. Volunteer work should be done in areas that impact a classroom teacher. The number of volunteer hours are tracked, tabulated, and eventually translated into dollars showing the amount of money saved in education expenses by volunteers. On both the state and international levels of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, these statistics are presented to lawmakers and used in educational public relations forums.
Every spring, members of Delta Lambda Chapter sign up to be “big sisters” to working members. They become sponsors for the upcoming school year by contacting the working members monthly in person, by email or by phone to check out how things are going and to let them know that they are important members of the chapter.
Before school starts each year, the sponsor visits the working member at her school and provides back-to-school support in the form of a hand delivered bud vase, a card, and a check from the chapter. Each vase has one fresh white rose with an artificial red rose so the vase can remain on her desk or in sight all year. Each vase also has a DKG card tied with a red ribbon. On the back of the card a note says "We Value Your Attendance” and lists the dates of the chapter meetings.
In total for the 2016-17 year, nineteen Delta Lambda classroom teachers received gifts presented by thirteen Delta Lambda sponsors.
